Dr. Susan Thompson

 

Suzan K Thompson, Ph.D., LPC, is a research associate professor in the Graduate Counseling Program at ODU; she is also a Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to teaching, she has a private practice in counseling where she uses a variety of healing modalities. She specializes in helping people find soul-fulfilling careers. Dr. Thompson co-created a popular course at ODU on Complementary and Integrative Therapies in 2006, the foundation of this certificate program.

What is Complementary & Integrative Therapy? Complementary and integrative therapies/ medicine are a group of diverse medical, healing and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered a part of conventional therapy or medicine. Integrative therapies combine treatments from conventional approaches to health and healing, for which there is some high-quality evidence of safety and effectiveness. This series of modules is a certificate program: a sequence, of academic workshops that focus upon an area of concentrated, cohesive area of information. Successful completion should help you achieve specified learning objectives and competencies in complementary and integrative therapeutic approaches. This certificate program includes a total of six modules; each consists of three days of lecture, discussion and experiential learning. To earn a certificate of completion, you must attend Modules 1 and 6 as well as 2 additional modules. The general outline for each module includes: Foundations of the System(s)
o At each level, how the system works (physical, mind, emotions, spirit)
Demonstration by seasoned professionals
o Tools and Techniques
Practice
o At least one tool/technique per presentation
Discussion
o Ethics:
 Who is appropriate and when to treat
